What is MCP?
The Model Context Protocol in plain words, and why it’s a safe way to connect an AI to OweJar.
MCP, the Model Context Protocol, is an open standard that lets AI assistants connect to apps. Instead of copying numbers into a chat, you connect your assistant to OweJar once, and it can look things up and make changes for you, within the permissions you allow.
How it works
- OweJar runs an MCP server at
https://owejar.com/mcp. It offers “tools”, such as list people, get balances or record a payment. - Your AI assistant (the MCP client) reads the list of tools and decides which ones to use for your request.
- You sign in to OweJar and approve which permissions the assistant gets. It never sees your sign-in code.
Why it’s safe
- You choose the permissions. Start with View records if you only want answers.
- Sensitive changes need you. Deletions, merges and reversals wait for your approval on an OweJar page. An assistant can’t approve its own request.
- Changes are previewed. Every change is prepared first and only saved when it’s exactly what was prepared.
- You can disconnect at any time from Account → Connected apps.
- No money moves. OweJar records events; it can’t send money or touch your bank.
Which assistants support MCP?
Many do, including ChatGPT, Claude (web, desktop and Claude Code), Cursor, Visual Studio Code and other agents that support remote MCP servers with OAuth sign-in over Streamable HTTP. Ready to connect? See Connect an AI assistant.
Assistants work with your cloud records: your web book, synced phone records and your groups. Changes still waiting on a phone to sync, photos kept only on a device and local backups aren’t visible to them.
