People and balances

Add people, understand every balance, link accounts and merge duplicates.

On this page

Every balance in OweJar belongs to a person. A person can be a friend, family member, colleague, landlord or a shop you run a tab with.

Add a person

  1. Choose New → Someone new, or Add person on the People page.
  2. Enter a name. Optionally add a group or category label, phone number and country, a note and a photo (JPEG, PNG, WebP or HEIC up to 10 MB; you can crop and zoom).
  3. Save. The person appears in People with a zero balance.

In the phone app you can also Pick from contacts. OweJar asks for contacts permission only then and saves only the person you pick.

Understanding balances

  • Owed to you: money people owe you from entries and expense shares you paid for.
  • You owe: money you owe others.
  • Balance: the difference. A positive balance means you’re owed overall.

On a person’s page, Overall balance with this person combines your private book and any groups you share with them, so you see the whole picture in one number.

The person page

  • Entries: every money entry and expense share with them, with a running balance.
  • Groups: groups you share and the balance in each.
  • Links: link their OweJar account, and set who usually pays for whom.
  • Details: name, phone, note, photo and category.

Actions at the top include Statement, Share statement, Edit person, Add money entry, Merge with another person and Delete person.

“Pays for” and “Paid for by”

Under Links, you can say that one person usually pays for another, for example a parent who pays for a child’s share. OweJar then shows a combined total for them. This is private to you and never changes anyone’s balance.

If the person uses OweJar too, choose Link {name}’s OweJar account and use their sharing code or link. OweJar never finds people by email or phone number. See Connections and your sharing profile.

Merge duplicates

If you added the same person twice, open one of them and choose Merge with another person. Their entries and expenses move to the person you keep. Merging can’t be undone, so check the names first.

Delete a person

Choose Delete person on their page. OweJar asks you to confirm. Settle or move their records first if you want to keep the history.
