MCP tools reference
The main tools OweJar offers to AI assistants, grouped by area, for curious users and builders.
On this page
You never need to call tools yourself; your assistant chooses them. This list helps when you want to understand what an assistant did, or you’re building with OweJar.
How changes work: prepare, then save
Each change has two tools: prepare_… and the action itself, such as prepare_entry_create and entry_create. Preparing changes nothing and returns a preview and an operation ID. The assistant then sends the same prepared change to save it. Only an accepted result means it was saved. Amounts are exact, in the currency’s smallest unit (for example paise or cents).

get_balances,get_person_balances,list_people,list_entries,list_expenses,list_expense_shares,list_settlementslist_bills,list_deliveries,list_tracked_occurrences,list_recurring_rules,list_expense_recurring_rules,list_reminderslist_categories,list_subcategories,list_activity,list_settingsget_agenda(what needs attention: due bills, deliveries, entries, reminders and recurring dates, plus group requests),get_spending_insights,get_person_statement,get_repayment_quoteexport_private_book(a spreadsheet file of your people, entries, payments, expenses or split shares)
The list_… tools take optional filters, and each tool names the ones it supports: for example q (name contains) and balance (owed_to_you, you_owe, outstanding or settled) for people, or personId, status and from/to dates (milliseconds since 1970) for entries. Results come newest first, a page at a time, unless the tool is given a sort, such as name_asc or owed_to_you_desc for people or due_date_asc for entries.

Every group and friend space uses the shared_v3_… tools, including groups without guests. The older shared_… group tools are no longer offered to assistants; the OweJar apps are unaffected.
If an assistant makes too many requests in a minute, OweJar answers with rate_limited and how many seconds to wait (retryAfter); the assistant can then try again.
* Needs your approval before it can be saved.
For the full catalogue, ask your assistant to list OweJar’s tools, or read the REST API description at /v1/openapi.json.
