Welcome to OweJar

What OweJar does, the three actions everything is built on, and your first five minutes.

On this page

OweJar is a personal ledger for money between people. It keeps track of who owes whom, what you spent on your own or together, and which bills and repayments are still open. It works in your browser, on your phone and through AI assistants such as ChatGPT and Claude.

OweJar records, it never pays.

OweJar doesn’t connect to bank accounts, move money or pay bills. When you “record a payment”, you are updating your ledger to match something that already happened.

The three actions

Almost everything starts with one of three actions, available from the New button at the top of the web app and on the phone’s home screen:

  • I gave: money you lent to someone or paid on their behalf. They now owe you.
  • I got: money you received or borrowed. You now owe them, or they paid you back.
  • I spent: an expense, either just for you or split with other people.

From these, OweJar works out every balance: how much each person owes you, how much you owe, and your overall position.

Look around first

Choose Try the demo on the home page to open an account full of fictional people, groups, loans, bills and statements in one click, with no email. It’s read-only and shared with other visitors, so nothing you change is saved.

Your first five minutes

  1. Create your account. Sign in with a 6-digit code sent to your email or with Google. New accounts start empty. See Create an account and sign in.
  2. Choose your currency and time zone. On the web, the Welcome to OweJar screen asks once. Your book keeps this currency; groups can use any currency.
  3. Add a person. Choose New → Someone new and type a name. Phone number, note and photo are optional.
  4. Record something. Choose New → I gave, pick the person, enter the amount and save. The balance appears immediately on the Overview.
  5. Split something. Create a group for a trip or your flat, invite people with a link, and add the first shared expense. See Groups.

Where OweJar works

  • Web app at https://owejar.com: your full book in the browser, with groups, bills, insights and statements. Every feature on the web is free.
  • Phone app for iPhone and Android: quick entry, notifications, contacts and encrypted backups, with your records stored on the phone first. See OweJar on the web and on your phone.
  • AI assistants: connect ChatGPT, Claude or another MCP client and ask questions in plain words. See Connect an AI assistant.
