What to ask: example commands
Dozens of ready-to-use prompts for balances, recording, groups, bills and insights, plus tips.
On this page
Talk to your assistant the way you’d ask a friend who keeps your books. Be specific about names, amounts and dates, and it will find the right records and tools.
Check where you stand
- Who owes me money, and who do I owe?
- What’s my overall balance in OweJar?
- How much does Aarav owe me, and since when?
- Show my last 10 money entries with Meera.
- Which entries are still unpaid from before June?
Record money you gave and got
- Record that I gave Kabir 500 today for lunch.
- I got 2,000 from Riya yesterday; she was paying back the concert tickets.
- Kabir paid back 300 of the 500 I lent him. Record it as a partial payment.
- Add a new person named Priya Sharma with the note “Office”.
Expenses and splits
- I spent 1,800 on groceries today, just for me, in Groceries.
- Split a 2,400 dinner equally between me, Aarav and Meera. I paid.
- How much did I spend on food last month?
Groups
- Show the Goa trip group: who paid what, and what I still owe.
- Add a 6,000 hotel expense to Goa trip, paid by me, split equally.
- Show my shared expenses and any payment claims waiting for me.
- I paid Meera 1,500 for the Goa trip by UPI. Record it.
- Give me the invite link for the Flat 4B group.
Bills, deliveries and reminders
- Which bills and deliveries are due this week?
- Mark this month’s internet bill as paid, 999.
- The milk didn’t come today. Skip today’s delivery.
- Add a monthly reminder for the money Kabir owes me.
Insights and statements
- Compare my spending this month with last month by category.
- Show my statement with Aarav for last month.
- Create a shareable statement link for Riya so I can send it to her.
- How much does Aarav need to pay today to clear his loan, including interest?
Corrections and deletions
- Change yesterday’s dinner entry with Kabir from 500 to 550.
- Delete the duplicate “Petrol” expense from Monday.
- Merge “Aarav P” into “Aarav Patel”.
Deletions, merges and reversals need your approval: the assistant gives you an OweJar link, you check the exact change and choose Approve change within 10 minutes. See Permissions, approvals and safety.
Tips for good results
- Use full names when two people share a name. If a name matches more than one person, a good assistant will ask which one you mean; answer before it continues.
- Say the date if it isn’t today, and the currency if it isn’t your book’s currency.
- Ask for a preview: “Prepare it, but don’t save until I say yes.” Every change is prepared first anyway.
- Check the result: a change is saved only when the assistant reports it as accepted. Ask “Did that save?” if you’re unsure; retrying the same change never creates a duplicate.
- Notes are just notes. Text inside a record is treated as data, never as instructions to the assistant.
- No money moves. “Send 500 to Kabir” can only be recorded, never paid. Use your bank or UPI app to pay.
