Connect an AI assistant
Step-by-step setup for ChatGPT, Claude, Claude Code, Cursor, VS Code and any MCP client.
On this page
Every assistant follows the same three steps: add OweJar’s address, sign in to OweJar, and choose what the assistant may do.
https://owejar.com/mcpThe steps for any assistant
- Add a remote MCP server (sometimes called a custom connector or integration) with the address above. If asked for authentication, choose OAuth. You don’t need an API key or token.
- Sign in to OweJar. Your assistant opens OweJar’s sign-in page. Use an email code or Continue with Google. Sign in with the account whose records you want to use.
- Choose permissions. The Connect an AI client page shows the assistant’s name and the permissions it asks for. Allow only what you need, then choose Allow access.
- Return to your assistant and check the connection: ask “List my OweJar books” or “Who owes me money?”.
Claude (claude.ai and the desktop app)
- Open Settings → Connectors and choose Add custom connector.
- Name it OweJar and paste
https://owejar.com/mcp. - Choose Connect, sign in to OweJar and allow access.
- In a chat, make sure OweJar is turned on in the tools menu, then ask your question.
On Team and Enterprise plans, an owner may need to add the connector for the organisation first.
Claude Code
Add the server from your terminal:
claude mcp add --transport http owejar https://owejar.com/mcp
Then start Claude Code, run /mcp, choose owejar and Authenticate. Your browser opens OweJar’s sign-in and permissions pages.
ChatGPT
- Open Settings and find Apps & Connectors (named Connectors on some plans).
- Create a custom connector or app, name it OweJar and paste
https://owejar.com/mcp. Choose OAuth for authentication. - Sign in to OweJar and allow access.
- In a new chat, choose OweJar from the tools or apps menu and ask your question.
Custom connectors can depend on your ChatGPT plan or on developer mode being turned on; those settings belong to OpenAI.
Cursor
Open Cursor Settings → MCP and add a new server, or add this to ~/.cursor/mcp.json:
{
"mcpServers": {
"owejar": { "url": "https://owejar.com/mcp" }
}
}
Visual Studio Code
With agent mode in GitHub Copilot, run MCP: Add Server from the Command Palette and choose HTTP, or add this to .vscode/mcp.json:
{
"servers": {
"owejar": { "type": "http", "url": "https://owejar.com/mcp" }
}
}
Other MCP clients
Any client that supports remote MCP servers over Streamable HTTP with OAuth works. Technical details for client authors:
- MCP endpoint:
https://owejar.com/mcp(protocol versions 2026-07-28 and 2025-11-25). - Protected resource metadata:
https://owejar.com/.well-known/oauth-protected-resource/mcp - Authorization server metadata:
https://owejar.com/.well-known/oauth-authorization-server - OAuth 2.1 with PKCE (S256), client ID metadata documents or dynamic client registration, and rotating refresh tokens with
offline_access. - The REST API uses the same sign-in and is described at
/v1/openapi.json.
If you connected before new features arrived, reconnect or approve the new permissions, then refresh the assistant’s tool list. Existing connections never gain new permissions on their own.
