Groups: start, invite and share

Create a group, invite people with a link or QR code, add guests and share a view-only link.

On this page

A group keeps one shared list of expenses, balances and payments for a trip, a flat, a team or a family. Groups are free for every OweJar account, and members only see that group, never your private book.

Create a group

  1. Open Expenses → Groups and choose New group.
  2. Enter a Group name and a Default currency. Expenses can still use other currencies.
  3. Save. You’re the group’s admin.

Invite people

Choose Invite on the group page to get an invite link (/join/…):

  • Send on WhatsApp, copy the link, or show the QR code to someone next to you.
  • Turn on New people need my approval to review each request before they join. Requests expire after 7 days.
  • Turn the link off or make a new one whenever you like.

People who open the link see the group and can join after signing in. It’s free and they don’t need the phone app. If you added them as a guest, they can choose Are you one of these people? and take over that place, including its expenses.

Guests: people without an account

Add someone by name as a guest to include them in splits right away. You can rename guests, make them inactive, or use Link an account later; the account owner has to accept before the guest place becomes theirs.

Choose View-only link to let anyone see the group without signing in, for example a friend who will never use OweJar. Viewers can use Find yourself to see what they owe. Receipts and notes stay private. A group can have up to five view-only links, and you can turn each off at any time.

When you create a link you choose which of your payment details it shows: all of them, some or none. They appear only while someone in the group owes you, with a Pay button next to each payment to you. Change the choice later with Change next to Payment details; only you can change it on links you created. Links made before this showed no payment details and keep showing none until you choose some.

Managing a group

  • Group settings: name, currency, and options such as simplified repayments.
  • Export CSV: download the group’s expenses.
  • Mute notifications and Archive for me change only your own view.
  • Leave group removes you; Close group for everyone (admins) ends it for all members.
  • Report abuse if someone misuses a group.

Next: Add group expenses and Settle up in a group.
