OweJar on the web and on your phone
What lives where, how sync works, and how to bring phone records to the web.
On this page
OweJar started as a phone app that keeps your records on the device. The web app adds a cloud book you can open from any browser. They work well together, but it helps to know which records live where.
What the phone app keeps on the device
On your phone, entries, people and expenses are saved on the device first, so the app works offline and nothing is uploaded unless you choose to. The phone app adds notifications for reminders and bills, contacts import, encrypted backups and nine languages.
What the web app shows
The web app works with your cloud book. It can’t see records that exist only on a phone, photos stored only on a device, or local backup files.
- Starting on the web? The first time you sign in, choose a currency and time zone and choose Get started. This is free.
- Already use OweJar on your phone? Turn on sync in the phone app under Me → Multi-device sync, sign in with the same account and finish the upload. Your phone book then appears on the web. Multi-device sync is part of OweJar Pro in the phone app.
If you start a book on the web and also have records on a phone, OweJar keeps them separate instead of merging them. Decide which one you want as your main book before you start syncing.
Sign in to the web with your phone
In the phone app, open Me → Sign in to web and scan the QR code on the web sign-in page. Check that the codes match, then tap Approve sign-in. This signs in the browser only; it doesn’t upload anything.
Groups work everywhere
Groups and shared expenses are free for every account and appear on the web and in the phone app without syncing your private book.
Phones connected to your account
Account → OweJar on your phone lists phones that use your account. Choose Forget phone for a phone you no longer use. This only removes it from the list; it doesn’t sign it out or delete its records.
