Privacy and security

What OweJar stores, who can see it, how AI access is limited, and how to stay safe.

Who can see your records

  • Your private book is visible only to you.
  • Group members see that group’s expenses, balances, payments and comments, never your private entries.
  • Statement and view-only links can be opened by anyone who has the link, until you turn them off. They show the payment details you chose for them only while someone owes you.
  • AI assistants see only what you allowed, and only cloud records.

Where your data lives

  • The phone app keeps records on the device by default and uploads nothing unless you turn on sync or cloud backup.
  • The web app and AI assistants use OweJar’s hosted service, which processes your cloud records to show and update them. It is encrypted in transit but isn’t an end-to-end encrypted backup.
  • Photos you upload are resized and their metadata is removed.

What OweJar never does

  • Connect to your bank, move money or pay bills.
  • Find you by email, phone number or contacts; connections use a code, QR or link.
  • Store your Google password or tokens.

Keep your account safe

  • Never share sign-in codes. OweJar will never ask for them.
  • Only approve AI changes that you asked for, and disconnect assistants you no longer use.
  • Don’t store bank logins, card numbers or ID numbers in notes.
  • Turn off statement and view-only links you no longer need.
